a Saab? Mine was my first Saab, a '71 99E back in '83. The ad in the paper said that the gearbox was shot and the price was $200. I called a friend of mine who was a Saab Master Technician and asked him what could possibly be the problem. He said that the linkage sometimes comes loose. So I took a long thin stainless steel (it was an aircraft bolt for the flight control linkage) bolt and went to look at the car. Had a friend move the gear shifter while I looked at the linkage and sure enough it had come loose. I paid the guy, crawled under the car and stuck the bolt in (it actually fit) and to his amazement, drove away. I felt guilty about it for a while, so I called the guy up and apologized. He said it didn't matter, he should have known better. I don't know if that story is better than this one: I really wanted an EMS so I kept looking for an affordable one a few months after I had the 99E. BINGO, '78 99EMS bad gearbox, $600. It was anthracite gray with Saab red interior, f/r spoilers, Inca wheels, fog lights, stereo... etc and in perfect condition. It even smelled new and it had less than 28,000 miles on it. I was ecstatic. I almost broke my hand trying to get the cash out of my pocket. I didn't even bother to check the linkage. I was almost certain it had the same problem. After paying the guy, I did the linkage check and to my disappointment, it was intact. Yep, the gearbox was totally shot. The rear cover was missing and there were chunks laying around in it. Oh well, can't win 'em all. I rebuilt the gearbox (cost 250 bucks for a used gearbox) and was on the road for about 6 months 'til I hit a 12 passenger Dodge van in the side at 65+ MPH (it was an old man who just pulled out in front of me without even looking). It did a complete lateral 180 degree rotation while I 'ricocheted' and clobbered a telephone pole. No one got hurt, not even my passenger who wasn't wearing his seatbelt. He did however hit his head on the windshield. After all that, I got 5900 bucks from the insurance company.
