Always look for a car dealer on painkillers Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What's the best deal (read:steal) you've ever had when buying.., Street, Thu, 3 May 2001 15:35:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Many years back I was looking for a VW Jetta for my wife (then girlfriend). I found an amazingly clean car with only 25K miles for something like $5500. Test drove and ran great. Noticed the saleswoman wasn't quite on top of her game. She confided to my girlfriend that she was having her period, and had taken a few of something to help with the pain. My girlfriend mentioned this to me, and that the woman had taken something like three times the normal dose.
She started at $5500, and I offered $2000, only after they brought the car up to 'safety spec'. After considerable arm twisting, we agreed on $3K, and they put on four new tires and a new exhaust system. The car was worth $5500 to begin with. The saleswoman was so twisted around that she was pleading with the sales manager to let the car go.
After driving the car for a week, I opened the hood and found the engine compartment covered with oil. Now I knew why the car was traded in. Turns out VW had trouble with a leaky oil pressure sender, and oil would leak from the sender, run down the wire, and drip into the flywheel, splattering oil all over. No one would find the leak, and the car was sold in horror. I put in an aftermarket oil pressure switch for $3.50. We drove the car trouble-free until 60K, and sold it for $1500 more than we paid.
