It could just need some work on the governor seals or valve springs. Both as I understand it, can be done without even taking the tranny out of the car, and both quite inexepensive. I had the governor seals done on my '87 former automatic, and unfortunately the tranny only went about six more months before dying completely.
At that time (well actually, a couple months later after saving up some $$$), I had it converted to manual. This cost me a good $1000 more than having the automatic rebuilt - I had the manual trans rebuilt that went into the car - but I have never regretted it. That despite the fact that about every hydraulic clutch failure known to a Saab has occured since the swap. Fortunately the shop covered some of the damages there..
If you're into performance, switching to a manual is about the biggest upgrade you can make, short of switching to a 2.3l Aero motor..
I also have enjoyed the 8% or so better fuel economy (more around town) that the manual provides, and it certainly makes for more fun on the twisty mountain roads!
If you can afford the conversion, I say go for it!
