Man, I would have 'had it' about 30 times if I gave up on my car every time it had a problem such as what you do!
In any case, Steve gives some excellent advice, has fixed just the problems you describe. I have another possible cause of your battery problem. Normally, if the alternator brushes/regulator need replacing, your battery light on the dash will come on. Does it? When your EDU is on the voltmeter, what does it read? If 13.0V or higher, your alternator may be ok.
I had a problem that seemed quite similar to a bad battery or alternator that wasn't charging, but the charging light didn't come on. Upon further examination, I discovered that one of the main battery ground cables, the ones that connects to the body, was badly corroded , and only making partial contact. I replaced both ground cables, put on super heavy duty gold connectors, and my average voltage readings jumped up a few tenths of a volt, and never have had problems since (that were not actually a dead battery or alternator needing brushes). :)
Never had a check engine light, I think at some point though, they made the system so that the light comes on when the O2 sensor needs changing. When was yours last changed?
