Is this a trick to prolong the life of an auto tranny?

My auto tranny used to be jerky when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I fixed it by adjusting the kickdown cable according to the Haynes. This in fact made the shift happen at an earlier RPM. As a result, it also shifts down more readily.

I thus wonder: Given one's specific driving habbit, can one play with the kickdown cable so as to ease the pressure and work load (thus prolong life) of the auto tranny.

More specifically, suppose I am a rough driver (whom I am not), if I shorten the kickdown cable, the tranny will shift from 1st to 2nd more quickly to absorb the impact of the big torque. Of course, this makes the car drives slower.

Does this make sense?

A common reaction that I anticipate is: Don't play with the factory setting which is already optimal. But, the standard is set assuming you are an average driver. In reality, no one is an average driver.
