87 auto tranny continued....

Well, I took my car into a reputable, ZF familiar tranny shop and explained to him the slippage problem from 4th to 3rd and slow shift from Park, to 1st.
Here is what he said: The ZF tranny engages a clutch for gears 1-3, and disengages it for overdrive (4th). So, the slippage from 4 to 3 is the worn clutch trying to engage. Same problem when putting it into gear from park.
Bottom line, he says the clutch is worn, not a thing I can do other than re-build it. Says I won't hurt it by driving it. It might last a month, it might last years, but at some point the car will stop moving forward.
$3000 for a rebuilt tranny installed. AAAACK!
I think I'm going to sell the car, which I've dumped tons of money into keeping it in top running shape, for around $2,000.
Any other suggestions? I don't really want to go on a car hunt, but I don't want to dump $3,000 in a car that is only worth $4,000 if it were in perfect shape (which it isn't).
Thanks in advance.
John
