First off, get a second opinion.
Second, you can get a autobox installed for about $2500. I wouldn't pay a shop to do a rebuild - I'd buy a rebuilt from Eriksson industries and have it installed. I understand they dynotest the trannys before shipment. Any decent shop can do the swap.
Next, what does it matter what the car is worth if you sold it? It's not an investment. Look at it this way - if you put the tranny in, you know you've got a tranny good for a long time. Yes, the car would be worth maybe $4000 to someone else, but what's it worth to you?
Basically, what's the chances that you'd find a clean 9000 with a known service history (as yours has) with a FRESH transmission for $4000? If you sell this car, I assume you'll have to buy something else. If that something else is used, all you're doing is trading your unknowns for knowns. The guy selling the next car to you is getting rid of it for a reason, and "moving out of the country" ain't good enough.
