Yesterday afternoon, I was behind two kids in what looked like a late '80's Pontiac Firebird at a stoplight. The light is about 500 yards from an I-95 onramp. The driver was revving his engine, so I revved mine, and he looked up and shook his head, as if to say "don't even think about it..."

Well, I was alone in my car, so when he punched it when the light turned green, so did I. He pulled away from me initially, but when we hit the onramp, I was right with him. We came around the sharp curve onto the highway, and there was no traffic to merge with. He must have floored it, because puffs of smoke came out of his dual exhausts.

I was in third gear and going pretty fast already, but when I hammered it, I got to nearly 6000rpms in a big hurry. I have owned my car for five years, and I don't think I've ever revved it that high before. It was then that I noticed that if I didn't move over one lane to the left, I was going to literally hit him. So I dropped into fourth, and just went right by him. He gave up, and when I looked down at my speedometer, I couldn't believe how fast I was going. Needless to say, I had a HUGE grin on my face.

I have a '92 9000T 5-spd with 130k miles on it. I have new Potenza RE-730's which I can't say enough about. My turbo gauge needle goes all the way into the red zone, and never seems to fade back into the yellow unless I lay off the gas. I bought it with 65k, and sometimes I wonder if the previous owner did something to it. My mechanic says it feels 'hotter' than his 94 Aero. (When I sell it, he wants first refusal!).

I guess that's a long way of saying that my car surprised me a bit today. I rarely run it all-out, since it's nearly 10 years old and has a lot of miles under it's belt, but I must say that it's the only car I have EVER had that is as much fun to drive today as it was when I got it in 1996. Plus, I'm 6'7", and I fit in it quite nicely.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I just had to share!

Happy Saabing.
