I have owned three 9K's--an '86, '91 9KT 5-door, and a '95 Aero--and can offer some input on the performance vagaries of each. My '86's 2L wasn't in the same league as either 2.3L car, of course, but the '91 with its Group 6-modified APC and Lambda modules and shorter gearing actually felt snappier than my present Aero, particularly at slower speeds. I had both for perhaps one month until I sold the '91 and relished in comparing the two, although I never actually put them head-to-head.

I feel that although the '91 felt peppier with its substantially lower gearing, I feel the Aero could've held its own with the '91 up to a point, and after that the larger Mitsu turbo and higher boost of the Aero would've made the difference. In C&D tests, the '91 was 0.1 sec. slower in the ¼-mile and 1 mph slower on top end than a '93 Aero they tested, and I think that is a fairly good synopsis of the comparison I noticed with my two cars.

The performance of the Aero feels much more long-legged, but every bit as scintillating, as the '91 with about 10% better gas mileage, largely due to the taller gearing. My '91 was a blast, but overall I'll take the Aero, especially with gas now at $1.70/gal. here. I've been getting 26-28 mpg in city/suburban traffic, which makes me very happy.
