Could indeed be lifter noise..

My '87 9000T, with 256k miles, had lifter noise. It came and went though. You could be standing right in front of it with the engine idling, happily ticking loudly away, then all of a sudden the noise would stop. The lifters can be had (all 16 of 'em) for around $250, installation is about three or four hours I think, if you pay someone else to do them, though supposedly their pretty easy to change yourself. You don't even have to take the head off..
The fuel injectors can also make noise, but it's not very comparable. The lifter noise is very clackety clack like a roller coaster chain (or I guess perhaps like a timing chain might be). Injectors are more of a ticking..
