Aaron et al,
I can tell you what I was looking for in a deck when I landed on the Clarion Pro unit. If you're going to be using a seperate amplifier then don't buy a deck with an inboard amp. Inboard amps have lousy low RMS power, no current to drive difficult loads, and pollute the sonic performance of the preamp, tuner and cd player. Not to mention that if the manufacturer doesn't have to shoe-horn an amplifier into an already tiny box there's more resources to devote to the rest. It's the same with home hi-fi: seperates sound better than an all in one receiver, period (Krell being the exception to the rule). I looked for the lowest impendence output (the Clarion Pro is about 30 ohms while most are around 100 to 200), which makes it less prone to engine noise, and is less affected by long interconnect runs; 4 volt RMS outputs are less prone to amplifying RF noise (decks are usually two volt), three preouts (so that you can be future proof in terms of multiamping, adding a sub, and be able to fade front to back). That about covers it. The irony with these decks is that they tend to cost more without an inboard amplifier! All that aside, if I were buying an all-in-one I'd go with a Nakamichi without a doubt. Their top end model defines what is possible, and that technology is bound to trickle down to their more affordable units. Cheers,
Bill
