Your shifting problem is pretty common and easy to fix. There's a rubber shift coupler that joins two parts of the shift linkage and the rubber tends to separate. Open up the hood and look down behind the transmision. You'll see a fairly thick rod leaving the transmission and going into the firewall. The coupler is in the middle. If you watch while someone else works the shifter you can see the rubber seperate. As a quick fix use a couple of zip ties or hose clamps to secure both ends of the coupler together. The replacement part is cheap and replacement isn't hard, though it's a little akward to get to as you'll see.
As for the idle, check carefully for vacuum leaks first. The hose tends to pop off the charcoal cannister and the hooter valve often give out producing leaks. Sometimes the small hoses just tend to crack with age.
