>> I either did not present my comments well or you misunderstanding.
No offense intended, but I think a little of both, actually.
> I was speaking in generalities. As in the average car owner. The average car owner does not own a Saab, Jaguar or Corvette.
I'll go along with that. Likely most cars with 100k have not had their coolant changed regularly, and I've met many people that don't even know it is a maintenance item.
> I personally have not seen any empirical evidence that it [BL] does work. Common sence, says it should help stops leaks. I only question the consequences.
I would consider most testimonies here to be empirical evidence, as I doubt if anyone on TSN would lie about their experiences with any given product. Making snap judgements is another matter, though, which we see from time to time--like the third-hand "expert"-mechanic testimony that synthetic oil destroys motors.
Also, BL's history and record is evidence to me, among other things the fact that it is installed in many new vehicles from their respective factories. I know of no other stop-leak formula that is installed in any new vehicle manufactured anywhere. What raised my eyebrows to BL initially was an item in the manual of my old, long departed 1987 Suzuki water-cooled motorcycle. There, it was stated in no uncertain terms that BL *must* be installed at every coolant change. I've never forgotten that, as something about BL must've impressed those Japanese engineers.
Your earlier post: >> A few years ago I used some of the Prestone stuff. Just happen to be the silver garbage.
> No, the flakey stop leak stuff. It looks like aluminum flakes.
This is why I misunderstood your post. The Prestone extended-life coolant comes in a silver container, but I'm still confused. You apparently put another brand of stop-leak formular in your car. In your earlier post I thought you said you installed BL pellets. Even with another brand of stop-leak formula, I doubt seriously if your head-gasket maladies are related to either it or the coolant, but you have asserted that you didn't intend to insinuate this anyway.
> No, and to be honest I take offense at this attack.
Please don't, as it wasn't an attack, though I can see how the arrows and bullets passing your head could've been deceiving. Sometimes my dialog gets a bit testier than necessary when I think irrational points are being made. I think most of that impression was from a basic misunderstanding of what you did and who you blamed for what. Some things just get my dander up, that's all.
> To reinterate. The stop leak had nothing to do with the failure.
Okay, it just sounded like you were making that implication when it was presented earlier.
> I will hereby disallow myself from posting on any Stop Leak Posts!
No need to do that. Aside from my periodic ranting, and from a few others from time to time, this board is pretty civil and very informative. Anyway, sometimes a bit of spirited dialog picks the interest up a bit, I think. I was interpreting your last post as an indictment of BL and/or Prestone coolant, and I saw no evidence to support it. Obviously, you meant something entirely different. The guy with the old, abused BMW I mentioned got the brunt of similar rant and rave from me and others, but he never re-posted. I guess he felt insulted too, but should've done as you did and explain further about what you had experienced.
> No, only posting my observations. I have trusted you guys and introduced the Bar's Leak to my Saab. I only introduced it in moderation.
A 5.5oz bottle of the BL in the silver bottle is correct. BL comes in several incarnations, which is confusing--pellets, liquid, heavy-duty, etc.
Putting more in the system won't hurt, BTW.
Now that you're a seasoned stop-leak user and researcher, I'll look forward to your contributions when the next such discussion pops up, probably next week when someone blames BL for his valve-cover leak. :-)
