I determine optimum pressure for a given tire by starting with the manufacturer's recommended cold pressure, measured with an *accurate* gauge, and then increasing slowly until the ride becomes unacceptable, then back it down a notch. There is a limit, of course, which is the max cold pressure molded on the tire itself.
I've traditionally used 38-40 front, 36 rear for 9K's with Z-rated rubber on 16" wheels (manual sez 36/36, which is Saab's idea of an optimum for ride and handling). Cold max for my 'Stones is 44 psi, if I recall, which is far too high for comfort. Increasing front/rear bias should decrease understeer, which is always prominent on any FWD car, but too much zeal in this department is not a good thing. Use moderation when going outside manufacturer's recommendations, and always check tire pressure when cold.
