Well, some may recall a few days ago I posted that my motor mounts were all a year and a half old or newer, and I got a lot of shifter movement still. I didn't report that also, I had found it somewhat difficult to get into 1st and 2nd gear at times.
To be fair, my 9000, even with BRAND NEW motor mounts in, never has shifted great compared to the only car I really have for a reference, my dad's departed '85 Accord. Always felt sort of imprecise in the Saab, in comparison, though not horrible..just not as smooth or good.
So anyhow, I'll come to the point. In the process of swapping a newer engine in, it was discovered that after no more than a year and a half, the front mount was pretty chewed up and definitely in need of replacement. Both the lower mounts BTW, are the solid rubber type. So, they threw another one of those in, and also put in the cheap Abbott urethane trans mount (pictures up soon). This was cheap - only $51 for the mount and $40 to install (similar method to doing the upper dogbone mount in urethane).
WOW, it's like a whole new car when it comes to shift quality! Very precise, smooth, no missed gears, easy to get into any gear at a stop, essentially, I can't see that anybody could complain about it now!
Now, it may have been a little cheaper labor to do the trans mount with the engine out..or maybe not. Vibration levels are the same as before (well actually lower with the newer engine), so I highly recommend the Abbott transmission mount! Some of the benefit is no doubt due to the new engine mount, but my car has never shifted this well even with all the engine mounts BRAND NEW.
