I go at the engine compartment every now and then with a wet rag. Never used degreaser or a water hose.
My third Saab battery [below] finally died, 40 months into its 60 month warranty, and I have decided to put in an Optima. While waiting for the local BatteriesPlus to replenish their stock of 34R, I put in the Autozone/Autocraft 58 from the other car ['84 Ford]. It has 575 CCA and 90 min RC.
That is not a bungee cord but 6 mm rope (normally used for prussik loops) to hold the Autocraft 58 against the front of the tray. Group 58 is wider than the Saab battery and just barely fits in the tray without the clamp, but is shorter lengthwise.
Notice how the negative battery cable had to be bent. I hope the cable will forgive this atrocity.
Optima supposedly has a disconnected shelf life of 300 days to over a year, so I can spend many months away without having to resort to a second smart charger, or a dumb charger on a timer. If the $126 Optima lasts at least 6 yrs., its cost per year would actually be less than that of the Saab battery. (Have to admit, though, that an $80 Interstate 34R, if it lasted 5 yrs., would beat the Optima on cost per year.)
Interesting factoid on parasitic load: When the car is off, the current draw is ~160 mA initially (upon applicaiton of battery power) and then within 10 or 15 seconds, drops to ~25 mA and stays there. I suppose that must be the engine and/or radio computer booting up and then going back to sleep.
