There is an amplifier under the front passenger seat. I posted a reply over the weekend to a question by Frank G concerning installing in a 97 CS. You should read that entire thread.
It is not entirely clear to me what you have done. Did you cut off the connector which had a black plug on the end? This is a DIN connector that goes to the under-seat amp. If you connected the speaker outputs from the new radio directly to the input wires to the amp (which are in the DIN cable), you will have very noisy and very loud sound. Turning the radio all the way down could produce a loud hiss. This setup is bad for everything involved.
The amp might run both your front and rear speakers or just the rear. Anyway, what you need to do is to run speaker wires from the back of your new radio to the output of the amplifier. See my post from this weekend for instructions. Whether that is just to the rear, or both the front and rear, you can determine by counting the wires coming out of the amplifier. 4 wires would mean just the rear. 8 wires means both.
Post a follow up if this is not clear
