installing the tachometer drive to the transmission. This symptom is as you have noticed and does not fully report correcly to the EDU/speedo computer. You did correctly, to re-engage the drive gears into full mesh, and your problem should be fully corected. Lets hope the burring of the gears on the end have not been to bad so as to cause some gear interference as the spalled pieces chip off.
Bottom line is: your transmission installer should have caught this on his post maintenance check. No excuses for turning out this kind of work, but it happens sometimes. It would be also wise to retorque all suspension parts especially the left frame bushes and the trans to engine studs after a thousand miles.
