First off, I can't think of a wiring harness in the trunk going bad that could cause the problem you describe. If a harness has a short in it, typically the fuse will blow. A short in the system could conceivably cause the alternator voltage to drop significantly, but only if the amount of current exceeds the output capabilities of the alternator. This is just not possible with any wires going to the trunk, without having smoke and fire coming from the wires. I think the dealer is blowing a little smoke, myself. Even most autoparts stores can diagnose a bad alternator, and the symptoms you describe are 99% of the time a failure in the brush pack/voltage regulator on the alternator. Occasionally the a diode in the alternator will fail. But, there's no wiring harness fault that is affected by engine RPM.

I'd ask the dealer which harness the fault lies in. If I remember correctly, in the trunk that means brake lights, turn signals, rear window defroster, rear A/C fans if you have it, reversing lights, rear fog light if you have it, and trunk light. All of these systems, except the rear defroster (30A) are protected by a 15A or 20A fuse. Simply remove the fuse for the system the dealer says is at fault. I still don't see how that can be the source of your problem though.. Not to mention that in my experience, it's extremely rare to have a fault in any of the harnesses going to the trunk.

I'd skip this particular dealer. If you can't find a local source, buy a voltage regulator/brush pack from the dealer, replace it, and be on your way. See thread below for replacement.
