Which refrigerant? Choices are R-12 and R-134a.
You need an appropriate manifold guage set for the refrigerant type. The guages hook on to the high and low side service ports. You then monitor high and low side pressures in comparison to the outside air temperature and the vent temperature to determine the state of your refrigerant charge.
Depending on where you are located, you might or might not be able to get more refrigerant to add. For instance, here in the States you can buy R134a at WalMart, but you need an EPA certification (which you can get online) to buy R-12. Except for Wisconsin, where you cannot buy R134a over the counter. I think that is also true in Canada.
