Do you have a leak that you are aware of? Was there any leak detection after the recharge? Did the shop pull a vacuum? How much and how long?
They filled until the pressure valve blew? I was not even aware that there was that type of valve on this system. I think that the pressure switch on the receiver/drier shuts down the compressor in the event of excessive pressure. And that would be a whole lot more pressure than 2.x pounds of r12, unless you have a serious blockage in the system. Did you actually see a spray of refrigerant?
Gauges won't help unless you can use them to replace the refrigerant that you are loosing. If you can't get your hands on R12, there is not much the gauges will tell you, except that it's time to take your car to a different ac shop. I saw some really inexpensive r12 gauges in the JC Whitney catalog ($30-$50 or something like that).
I would suggest you buy a quality thermometer with a large face. When your system won't cool below 48 F on a hot day (ACC on low from center vent), you are loosing capacity.
If you have a leak, continually replacing R12 is going to get expensive very quickly. You might think about trying to fix the leak and converting to R134a. The conversion on my 91 resulted in excellent ac performance. However, I have been plagued by leaks, which have given me consitent opportunities to learn more and more about auto ac. I think my leak problem is related more to the age of the components than to the conversion.
