Not 100% sure why, but this is what happened...

I was turning some RPM in 3rd gear on the motorway and got a loud bang, and something rattled along under the car. When I looked in my mirror to see what it was (it was night-time), I saw a huge cloud of smoke and brightly glowing things bouncing along the road.
I believe one of the con-rod big-end bearing caps broke free. While it smashed its way through the sump and shattered the core of the cat on the way (cat is under the sump on the '96) causing oil to turn into smoke on the cat and the glowing cat core to exit via the exhaust tailpipe, the rest of the con-rod smashed two holes in the block (one front and one rear) before finally getting broken off and mangled.
I coasted to the side of the road where I watched anxiously as the oil drained out of the sump to produce flames on the cat.
No idea of the cause, as the engine had been dealer-serviced to the Saab schedule from new. I don't think I was hammering it that hard. Just one of those things, I suppose. I'm assured it doesn't happen often and that the Saab 4-cylinder bottom end is widely regarded as being practically bombproof. So it obviously can't have been a bomb...
