Excellent suggestions! I used a screwdriver and toothbrush to coax soapy dishwashing water into the joints, then wiggled the smaller end free first, then twisted the hose to and fro several times, but the big end still did not come off, but after more huffing and puffing, it finally did.
To my untrained eye, for a seven year old car, it looked surprisingly clean inside the tube, the hose, and as far into the throttle past the plate as I could see (which was not very far). What do you think [pic below]?
Anyway, I sprayed Gumout Air Intake & Throttle Body Cleaner ("For Fuel Injected Engines"), put the hose back on, ran the engine, and repeated this several times. Every time the engine ran roughly for only a few seconds, then cleared up. The last time, it almost stalled. I also sprayed into that tube that goes down to I think the IAC valve.
The spray can says, "Not recommended for diesel, rotary or turbocharged engines." I just ignored this. Any idea why they say that?
Well, judging from this first foray beyond oil changes, it looks like my fledgling career as a Saturday mechanic might amount to something after all...
