As we know, fuel, sparks and compression are essential to fire the engine.
There is a simple procedure to check the fuel pump with the ignition key on by jumpering the fuel pump fuse to that of the hazard light. Fuel pump will whine if it is good. He can also loosen the bolt on the fuel rail to check the presence of fuel.
Does the tach needle hunt when he cranked the engine? A weak current is generated by the crank sensor. If that is good. Check DI and ECU next. If a garage is available, the DI may be removed and wired (for grounding to the engine block) with plugs attached, right side up, and then crank the engine to check for sparks. ECU is tough, you need a spare.
The worst case will be the timing chain broke or slipped, in either case there won't be compression. Bent valves is the minimal damage if that happens.
Good luck.
