Serpentine Belt

The one man C-clamp method to install the serpentine belt I was so proud of resulted in an unexpected mishap. Between two engine pull-off's, two intemediate shaft replacements, I probably C-clamped the tensioner six times to install the serpentine belt all by myself without a helper.
10,000 miles later, the 8mm bolt at the top of the tensioner sheared off, resulting in a loose belt. The broken bolt shank tip was stuck inside the threaded hole in the timing chain cover. Fortunately, it was not that difficult to get it out.
Everytime I used the C-clamp, I was clamping on the top of the tensioner, thereby loading the bolt in direct shear, rather than the slot near it where the special tool was supposed to sit. Further, it took two to three tries every time because the C-clamp would slip off easily. Well the failed bolt would have been loaded in shear all the same no matter how the tensioner is loaded. I still don't know if it was the frequency with which I install the S-belt, or the improper bending on the bolt which resulted in the failure.
This time I used an adjustable wide jaw plier to compress the tensioner while my son fits the idler on to complete the procedure.
Thougtht I share this experience with the board.
