In practice, your idea may not work. Correct me if I am wrong, the tensioner is bolted to the timing chain cover by a base at the bottom (three torx screws) and a 8mm bolt at the top. The bottom of the tensiner spring (actualy hydraulic) is attached to the base. At lease one of the torx screws, if not more, is behind the tensioner. You need the tensioner spring to swing widely to remove and attach all three torx screws.
What this means is you can not install the tensioner assembly as the last step in the procedure. Because there are three screws and one bolt to attach and tighten. When the S-belt is fitted, the tensioner will not swing at all for you to fasten the screws.
Hate to throw cold water at you. The SAAB special S-belt removal and installation tool is not made without a good reason.
