Belt squealing noises at startup? Don’t forget to check the alter

I have heard squealing noises at startup since I bought my –88 CD 9kt last summer. Renewed the belt pulley (the one with the tensioning mechanism) a few months ago without solving the problem. Last week a new, more permanent sound, appeared from the same area, the frequency now changed with the motor turnover. First I thought it was the steering pump that had gone. I was about to order a new one, but when I removed the inner wheel liner and the belt, it was easy to diagnose the alternator bearings as bad. When I last drove the car before repair, I also noticed that the voltage output cycled between 13,5-17,2 (!) V, clearly the voltage regulator was bad too. So I renewed the alternator, and thereby discovered the famous upper alternator bolt that is accessible only from beneath and from the inside of the engine compartment. You cannot actually see it, but you can feel it with your fingertips and slide a socket on the end of an extension shaft over it. The relief I felt when the bolt lost its grip and I knew it was mine! Yet more relief when I started the car up again with the new alternator and discovered that every electrical function (so far?) was normal, unharmed by the high voltage output.
Summary: It was difficult for me to accept any bearings to be worn out, as the milage of my car is low, documentated by the previous owner, < 50k miles. I probably could have limited the costs to the price of new bearings if I had reacted in time. Generally, noises can be difficult to sort out. It is easy to jump to wrong conclusions, costing time, money and DIY pride.
Thanks for your attention
