I took my 97 Aero to my Saab dealer when it had about 1000 miles left on the factory warranty and asked them to go over the car as if I were contemplating purchasing the vehicle. I asked them to check for obvious problems and leaks. They found that 3 of my power window regulators were noisy and replaced them all under warranty (normally a very costly repair). They also replaced a leaking power steering hose. In addition they replaced an expensive body molding part that had warped and did not seat properly. Total cost to me: $0. Everything else checked out fine, and it was almost 10,000 miles later before I had my first out-of-warranty repair: a bad BPC valve which was covered by the extended warranty that I had purchased. The $78 I spent for that last check-up before the factory warranty expired was worth every penny. I highly recommend that you have the car checked even if you have had an excellent service history on the car.
If you are planning on keeping the car for another 35-50K miles, then I strongly recommend purchasing a comprehensive extended warranty that will pay for Saab OEM parts. My experience with the 9000's (my family owns four of them)is that they tend to have several costly repairs between 50K and 100K miles that can easily exceed the cost of the extended warranty. Typical failures which are well documented on this site include the DI cassette, the heater core, and the BPC valve -- none of which are inexpensive to replace. My experience is that the water pump and/or the alternator will have to be replaced in the first 75K miles or so (the water pump alone costs $360+ to replace). With an extended warranty you get the peace of mind that if a major component fails (which can be very expensive on a Saab), you will have little to no out-of-pocket expense. I put over 217K miles on my last Saab, and most of the repair costs that I incurred for the car came between 50K and 100K miles. After 100K miles and until about 200K miles, I spent very little on the car other than routine maintenance. By the way, I am a fanatic about oil changes every 3K miles: neither my last Saab (217K miles) nor my last two sports cars (200K+ miles each) ever had any engine work done to them in their entire histories.
