I have read many of the posts concerning extended warranties, and I agree that most of them are not worth the money for all of the reasons that you enumerate. I never purchased an extended warranty before the one I got for my Aero, but I am very glad that I have this one. Its purchase was prompted by my experience with my last Saab and by my brother's experience with his 9000T which cost him about $3,000 in repairs between 50K and 75K miles (including the DI cassette, AC compressor, factory stereo, alternator, water pump, and ACC controller). I researched all of the programs offered by the major companies and found that the AAA warranty was the best for the money. Yes, it is expensive, but so are the parts and labor. I think that I will get more than my money's worth out of this warranty. It is interesting to note that my dealership sells the MasterGuard warranty which was more expensive than AAA's for less coverage.
In the three extended warranty repairs that I have had so far, only a $4.95 hose clamp was not covered by the warranty. They have no problem paying for factory Saab parts (the only kind that I will use), and AAA pays the dealer directly over the telephone by credit card. My dealership has not had any problems with them in getting approvals for the work that needs to be done, and they have been very cooperative about calling AAA. One thing that the warranty will not cover is diagnostic time, but that is usually very small in comparison to the cost of the repair.
You do have to buy the warranty before the factory warranty expires. I believe that it must be done within 1000 miles or one month of the expiration of the factory warranty whichever comes first. Extended warranties are not for everyone, but those of us who keep our Saabs for a long time can dodge the bullet of some very expensive repairs with a good plan.
