The Offset of a wheel is the distance from the rear surface of wheel nut flange( the surface that goes against the surface of the wheel hub on the axel) from a line across the rear of the rim of the wheel.Lay a wheel face down place a straight edge across the rear of the rim and measure the distance down(depth) to the rear surface of the wheel flange.When a car is designed the center line of the wheel is over the center line of the wheel bearing so the bearing is equally loaded side to side,front edge to back .When you change the offset the wheel bearing is now not loaded correctly and will wear faster than normal.The classic case use to be on the old VW Beatles where the wheels would go on either way,and some would put the wheel on reverse.Which now caused the wheel to be outside the edge of the fender,and the track of the car was larger,but the wheel bearings would not last.When you go up in rim width you must correct the offset depth also the wheel bearing is loaded properly again.
