Several tuners, eg. Abbott Racing here in the UK, are sanguine about the ability of automatics to handle more power, thought they still limit the torque compared with manuals, and suggest you avoid full-throttle changes. My '93 automatic now has a 3" exhaust and catalyst, which has probably put the power output up to about 215 bhp. It's seriously fast, very flexible, and I honestly doubt that I would want much more power: overtaking is savagely rapid and hills simply disappear. Top-end performance is much improved, too. I do use plenty of fuel, but later cars should be better in this respect.
I also don't think the 9K manual is a very special gearchange, and with front-wheel drive there's a case for the "point and squirt" technique that automatics suit very well. Nothing lasts forever, and manual boxes can fail - clutches need replacing, too. You could spend a little cash upping the automatic Aero's power output and have a very enjoyable car.
