Personally, I think a turbo and an automatic is a good match, depending on what it is. Generally, I regard Volvo as doing the best job of matching turbos to automatics, and SAAB are good too, from a driving point of view. Mind you, recent Volvos have a whole lot of other shortcomings. I went from a manual to a non-turbo automatic, to a turbo automatic, to a turbo manual (my present 9000). I have heard of a lot of complaints about SAAB turbo automatics, but I don't know the previous history of these cars. The automatic Aero is certainly going to be slower than your 5spd. As Chad said, Areos with an automatic are mostly a CSE with 16" wheels and some other bits and pieces, but just the 200 hp engine. 9000 automatics definitley do not handle extra power from ECU upgrades very well. I owned automatics largely because of what I found at a good price at the time in question. I personally prefer a manual, though I live in a heavily trafficed area (17 miles west of Boston) and commute in traffic every day. From your message, I suspect you do not live/drive in conditions that make an automatic particularly desirable. The only way to really find out if you can live with the automatic is to drive it. During the six years I drove automatics, 2/3 of the time I wished I had a 5 spd. In the time I have been driving a 5 speed, I have never, not even in the worst traffic jam, ever wished I was driving an automaic... But, I do know people who swore they would never drive an auto, and once they swapped they will never go back. Now that I have confused you...
