interpretation of the word "self". The groan you are hearing is usually caused by the entrapment of air I have had on occasions to jack up the car, engine off, and slowly circulate the rack full stop slowly from right to left. let it sit at full throw for a few minutes(5) and then very slowly rotate back the other way and wiat. Leave the cap off the PS reservoir seems to allow the fluid to flow a little more freely. after doing this for four or five cycles I start the engine let it idle and repeat several times. this will remove the major portion of the air. the rest will come out through use. The groan is annoying but it shouldn't hurt the pump if you don't force it to the locks and cause the relief to pulse. It should not groan when not moving the rack. Did you use GM Saginaw fluid? It seems to flow quite well and is recommended by Saab. Look at your fluid is it sort of frothy/milky if so you have an abundance of air in the system.
