Hey all,
I know this is a recurring thread, but this time I'd like to nail down some specifics for my 1996 9000CSE Turbo. The general consensus on muffler replacement, after having read what felt like hundreds of threads, is this:
1. If you have a lot of $$$ and want some performance, buy an Abbott or something from Sweden.
2. If you have a lot of $$$ and just want something as good as what Saab put on in the first place, go to the dealer and buy a stock muffler.
3. If you don't have a lot of $$$ and want some performance, get a system fabricated from Magnaflow or Dynomax parts, preferably 3" diameter and skipping the center resonator. Magnaflow seems to be more popular, and the 3" will really only help if you've got a high-flow cat (from http://www.randomtechnology.com) and a 3" downpipe from Sweden.
4. If you don't have a lot of $$$ and just want something as good as what Saab put on in the first place, buy a Starla.
Well.....I think I fall into category #3. I'm willing to go to the trouble of getting a system fabricated from stainless steel Magnaflow parts. However, I think I'd prefer to stay with stock diameter piping since I don't plan to mess with the cat or the downpipe. So, the specifics I'm looking for:
- which model# Magnaflow do I want, for a stainless, offset inlet/outlet stock diameter (whatever that is) muffler?
- how does the muffler attach to the stock hangers, or does it?
- how are most exhaust pros dealing with the odd curlicue bendy tailpipe exiting the muffler? I'd like to attach a nice-looking stainless double-wall tip where it pokes out from under the rear bumper, but am not sure about how that would work with one of these Magnaflow setups.
- should I leave the stock center resonator in there, or have it replaced with a straight-through piece of pipe?
Thanks for any and all advice you can give to all these questions.
-John
