There are two bolts connecting the strut and the steering knuckle/front disc/brake caliper assembly. Remove those two bolts to pull the joint out. You need to do both sides. So unlike some car makes, both front wheels are out when you do the transmission.
I recommed removing the intermediate shaft first before you remove the transmission and install it after it is fitted. Because the intermediate shaft is connected to the rear engine mount, you have to remove it too. That's tough without a lift. SAAB has a tool which is a beam sitting across the engine bay to support the engine with only one front mount, Why remove the intermediate shaft first? You'll be alligning both the input shaft for the tranny and the output shaft of the transmission to the passenger side (intermediate) shaft at the same time during fit up, which is extremely difficult IMO. I say this because I don't have a transmission jack. It may be easy for you if you have access to one.
