9-5 posting- synthetic vs conventional oil

Once you use the semi-synthetic oil, you should stay with it. It has different cleaning properties, and a retro-fit of pure oil can have negative consequences. Same is true if you upgrade from the factory installed semi-syn to full synthetic - stay with the full if you make the move. I carry a couple of Saab Semi-Syn liters in the little compartment in the left rear of my Aero Wagon (the cd changer space) to have in case I need oil.
My independant Saab mechanic does not like synthetic oils in road cars at all. He says it is great in racing engines (lots of stress, high heat, short mileage between tear-downs, etc.) but he sees very unusual wear patterns on synthetically lubricated engines that have high mileage (130k+ miles) and he doesn't like what he's seen.
I'm staying with the semi-syn for now, and at least through the first 35k. By then a retrofit to Castrol will be out of the question.
