For crying out loud. Anyone can at anytime change from whatever to fully synth. I agree that one might need to pay attention to some aspects, like the dirt in the engine (amount), oil-consumption and so on...

I agree that one should NEVER step down in quality, only up. I've used Mobil 1 fully synth 5W-50 and/or 0W-40 in my three Saabs: 99L -78, 150,000 miles when bought and 200,000 miles when sold, 900 turbo16 -85, 130,000 miles and finally my current car, a 9000 CS 2.3I -92, 140,000 miles. I know the 99 was always driven on a Valvoline 15W-40 regular oil. I started using Mobil 1 5W-50 when I bought the car (10000 miles after!) and the seals didn't start to leak and oil-consumption didn't go up!!! However I improved the mileage!!! Also, the noise from the cold engine (due to tear) stopped with the fully synth after 10 miles of driving, whereas it took some 20 miles with the regular oil.

Just 3 weeks ago we went on holiday (to participate in Saab meetings). We drove 4000 miles in 10 days. I had the 0W-40 oil on the engine and was anxious to see the oil-consumption, which turned out to be 0!!!!! The one day we drove constantly for 22 hours. The car has 140,000 miles on the meter.

I do not believe that a normal street car can't stress the oil. If you car is equipped with a turbo, then so even more! 800 degreees Celcius. Lots of short erin trips of less than 20 miles, where the engine doesn't get hot at all. Heat in general in the summer and freezing in the winter - talk about stress to the oil.

My mechanic has another 9000 owner, who chages his engine AND gearbox oil every 5000 miles. He uses Mobil 1 fully synth. He drains the car (stands 30 mins dripping), flushes with 1 litre of mobil 1 (another 30 mins) and the fills in the new oil and filter. His car has over 250,000 miles on the meter and has never been opened!!!

To NEW car-owners I can only say: Use ONLY fully synth engine oil! The cars of today (and Saab of yesterday!) has so small margins inside the engine, that you'll need an easy-running engine oil to do the job properly, meaning if you want it to fun for years and years and years...

Cheers!
