Check out Quasi's site: http://quasimotors.gar.net/belt_install.htm
and definately check back through the archives. Search on "serpentine" and go from there. You can do it without removing the fender inner liner, but I don't recommend it. The additional time of removing the liner is well worth it. Basically, you'll need to compress the belt tensioner. I have built a tool to hold the tensioner in compression. It's just a metal bar with two bolts. Easy to make (see Quasi's site), but don't skimp on the metal thickness. Use at least 1/4 inch thick steel. Other folks just compress the tensioner with a BIG breaker bar, and slip the belt on and off then. I'd use a helper to do this, but I guess it could be done by one.
It's very possible that the wrench got wedged in somewhere and that knocked the belt off. However, there are cases where a pulley misalignment can cause the belt to come off, and the wrench is unrelated. I would replace the belt and hope for the best. If the belt in any way looks worn or nicked, replace it.
I would also go back to the shop with the wrench in hand, and ask them how much they want to get it back. If you don't get major apologies, find another shop.
