and my '97 9000 lpt is doing something very similar. First time I experienced it was a few weeks ago. I dropped from 5th to 4th at 65mph on the highway, and floored the throttle pedal... the car coughed, and then all was well. A couple of weeks later, at 25mph in 2nd on an on-ramp I floored it, and the same thing happened again! No matter how hard I tried to intentionally repeat the event, I could not do it! Then, last week, while gently accelerating from a rolling start through a toolbooth at about 20mph in 2nd, it happened again. I had an appointment for a 35k service coming up, so I talked to the service tech about it, and he felt the service would probably fix it. The problem recurred many times over the next week... The car was serviced yesterday, and generally everything was done to my satisfaction, except the coughing is not completely gone. It only happens if I bury the accelerator pedal into the carpet, but it does happen. The problem also appears to be worse going uphill... My suspicion is that it is a fuel related problem, either pump or injector, or less likely an ignition problem. I haven't had any different smells, and I doubt my problem is turbocharger related, but the symptoms sound remarkably similar to yours...
