Our 91 9000 turbo has two problems that I could use some input on to help me decide what I am going to do with the old girl. The car has 196K on it
and had about $2300 worth of work done on it three months ago when the timing chain (and most of the related gearing) and head gasket was replaced. Body is in excellent shape w/ the interior still very good. Family loves the car and there really isn't anything like a 9000 for fast, safe people and stuff hauling. Despite the love, the car is very expensive to maintain. The question of the day is ... do we keep pouring money into it? The problems:
1. The auto trans is original and has begun to slip. Most noticeable between 2nd and 3rd with the extra weight of passengers in the car. I know we have had a better than normal life expectancy from the trans but are there any adjustments that can be made to squeak a little more life out of it? Slippage is in early stages.
2. The AC has been the bane of my existence. Complete changeover (compressor, evaporater, AC lines etc. - heater core and blower have also been replaced.)from original about two years ago. Has never worked right since despite being to three mechanics and two dealerships. Very intermittent. Almost always blows cold when you start up and then gradually gets warmer. Often will throw ice through the vents. Sometimes will stay cold for an hour if stuck in traffic but once you get moving at speed it goes bye bye. We are now getting a "2" showing up on the climate control display on start up. Not sure what that means but could it be related.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!
