Quasi is right - the automatic tranny is a problem in the 9000. But take it in context. In general, an automatic is good for about 80 to 120K miles. Some go sooner, some last longer. But around 100K miles is a safe bet.

That works out to about 6 or 7 years, depending on how many miles a year you drive. No car runs without any repairs, so doing an autobox every 6 years or so is part of the territory. That's not to say that manual boxes are trouble-free. Clutches wear out, and anybody that's ever had a clutch slave cylinder fail or saw 5th gear go away can share some choice words.

If you prefer 5 speeds, get a 5 speed. The 5-speed will be a little more reliable. It will also be faster and get better gas mileage. If you want a 5-speed but you find an automatic, wait. A 5-speed will come by.

But if you like automatics, get one. All my 9000's have or have had automatics. I prefer 5-speeds, but my wife has a knee problem and can't drive a manual without pain, and I have a hard time justifying owning a car half the family can't drive.

With this car, check the repair records. What, no repair records? Then there are more issues than the autobox with this car, and run, don't walk, away. Perhaps the tranny was replaced once already, say about 80K miles. That means that the present tranny has only 40K on it - plenty of life left. What, you're worried about what will hapen in another 40-60K? First off, lots of things - something else could break, or you just get tired of the car and sell it. But build into the price the knowledge that you may need to replace the tranny in 3 years or so.

If the tranny is original, and you still like the car, build the price of a rebuilt tranny in - about $2500. That way, if the tranny does die, you've bookept the money. If it doesn't, then you're ahead of the game. Nothing wrong with autoboxes, just take them into account.
