Aftermarket ECU vs. TCS

From what I can gather the TCS and the engine managment system are both on the same chip (ECU?). This apparently is where Saab had initially fouled up and in the later models (like Volvo's have done) kept the engine managment and traction control on different chips. If our TCS goes wrong, it interupts our engine management causing the limp-home mode? Is this right? Then, is it possible to get an aftermarket ECU that doesn't have the TCS? Or can a place re-program the stock ECU and somehow disconnect or disable the TCS electronically? It could be two birds with one stone, better perfomance and no TCS. My 92' goes in the shop on Thursday for an ISAT to find the problems with the TCS.
