DC-4, as a moisture proofer and dielectric grease on electrical connectors. Mc Donnell Process Specs recomends it on the Hornet and Super Hornet armament connectors exposed to deck splash-salt water. The Eagle and Strike Eagle use a similar compound of another propriatary compound developed by MDC. Normal grease, petrol base, has a destructive effect on many backshell seals and potting compounds especially any thing with silicone compounding. Actually, in SEA all of the F-4s had to be stripped and repotted because of reversion of the potting compoung which were initially assembled with a petrolatum as a moisture proofing compound. That is when DC-4 came into wide spread usage and I became acquainted with the benefits of DC-4 and the problems associated with a petrol based lube. I had always used DC-4 in the forties and early fifties as a high altitude dielectric on my spark plugs (all 72 of them!) but not on connectors. In your car, normal grease melts and evaporates leaving connectors unprotected and can destroy many of the silicone compound boots and jackets.
