However, my exhaust is blowing at the flexible joint - someone else here reported a similar noise that went away when he replaced the exhaust. If you haven't done anything with it in a week or two, I'll have replaced my exhaust and will be able to tell you more. Given the cost of a turbo, it's worth making sure. How many miles are on your car? What do you know of its history? Turbo failure in a Saab is not common, but does happen, of course (my '87 2.0T had never had turbo problems when I sold it at 200K miles).
In the meantime, even if it is a faulty turbo, I'm sure it will whine for ages before you really have to replace it.
Mine cost £832 (US$1200) from a Saab dealer (parts only - for reasons I won't go into, they fitted it free), so $1400 fitted, although not cheap, sounds a reasonable dealer price. They insisted on replacing the studs as well, which were nearly £80 of the overall price.
Given the choice (I wasn't!), I would have had mine rebuilt by a local turbo specialist and either fitted it myself or had it done by the specialist. That would have been much cheaper.
