Not too bad. Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Turbo: How much and how difficult?, Brian 92 CDt, Tue, 17 Jul 2001 14:29:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Haynes manual has some reasonably good directions and pictures. From memory I would say:
1. Remove lower front plastic cover (underneath the car) to gain access.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Remove radiator fan and shroud from radiator to give you more access--this will require removing the hoses from the BPC valve. Mark the hoses so you know which hoses go where.
4. Remove the air intake hose from the turbo and the two rubber hoses that run up to the BPC valve.
5. Remove top bottom oil pipes from turbo.
6. Remove lower coolant pipe from tubo.
7. Don't remove the top coolant pipe, it's impossible to get at while it's on the car. Remove the rubber hose from the end of the pipe instead.
8. Remove the exhaust pipe from the end of the turbo. The nuts are very hard to get off. Use penetrating oil and a stubby 13 mm combination wrench. Try not to let the exhaust hang to low-the flex pipe can be damaged.
9. Remove the steady bracket that goes from the turbo to the engine block.
10. Remove the 4 nuts that attach the turbo to the exhaust manifold
11. lift the turbo out. Remove the coolant hose before you send the turbo out for repair.
This represents about 2 hours worth of work (maybe longer if the exhaust pipe bolts are really rusted on there). When get your turbo back you will need 4 new studs and bolts for the exhaust manifold and a new gasket. The exhaust pipe end will need 3 new studs and bolts. Don't forget to pre-oil the turbo before you put it in. I should take a little less time to put the new turbo back in.
Good Luck!
