The following is a procedure to remove the trim panel without taking the whole sunroof mechanism out of the car. I claim no credit for the following write up - someone else posted it a while back when I was asking.
Thanks whoever you are.

SUNROOF AND TRIM PANEL

Removal

Remove wind defector if fitted

Open roof 15 cm

Remove edge moulding to roof aperture completely

Release 2 push clips at the front of the trim panel by pulling down - gently

Push the trim panel back into roof as far as it will go –but don`t force

- if it won`t go right back into the roof void proceed as follows:

Close roof, open rear edge of sunroof and pull trim panel rear edge towards rear of car, so that the U shaped channel is free from the pin on each side

Lower the trim panel rear edge and slide the panel back into roof void

Still with roof open, remove 6 screws, 3each side and remove steel panel

Slide trim panel forward, up and over the projecting pins

Press down on each rear corner of trim panel, lifting the channel , to unclip the trim panel, and remove

CARE ! do not operate roof with channel unclipped !

Replacement

Position trim panel as per last stage of removal. Use long thin blade screwdriver from inside car to clip panel back onto channel

Slide trim panel back into roof

Still with roof open, refit steel roof with threadlock to screws, but do not tighten

Close roof and now tighten screws to adjust fit

Pull trim panel as far forward as possible

Open rear edge of roof

With 1 hand top and bottom of trim panel ease it further forward, so rear edge can lift up

Raise rear edge of trim panel and guide the channels one at a time onto the projecting pins

Push each rear corner of the panel until it each clicks into place

Lower roof and open 15 cms. Press 2 metal push clips at front of trim panel into place
Refit aperture moulding and deflector

To remove the panel, put the sunroof in the tilt position. Once in the tilt position, look down into the open rear of the sunroof, and you'll notice there's a black metal channel parallel to the rear of the sunroof. This is the rain gutter, which aligns underneath the rear seam of the panel when it's closed. This item is actually attached to the interior sunroof panel and slides with it when sliding the sunroof open or closed. Your first step is to feel around for the two metal battens (one each side) that make this connection. They disconnect by popping them downwards and out of the clips on the underside of the rain gutter. Once disengaged, push the rain gutter as far back into the roof as possible. If you don't, the gutter may cause jamming when you're moving the sunroof back and forth to complete disassembly/reassembly.

Next, reach under the trailing edge of the tilted-up interior sunroof panel and pull it slightly away from the metal roof panel. You'll notice there are two rollers which fit inside plastic guides on the underside of the metal panel. To disengage the rear of the interior panel, simply push the panel forward, thus moving the rollers out of their tracks. You may have to reach in and carefully push the rollers out of the tracks, but be careful not to break them!

Finally, tilt the sunroof back down, and slide it open enough to have clear access to the leading edge of the interior panel. Gently pull the leading edge of the panel to disengage the three clips which fit into holes in the metal panel. Push the interior panel back slightly to prevent jamming, and return the metal panel to the tilted position. Now all you have to do is pull the interior panel backwards and upwards out the top of the sunroof opening. Reassembly is the reverse of removal. Be patient and don't force things, and you'll get the panel out without much trouble.

As to the sunroof stops, the fix here is to remove the plastic access panel , then remove the whole plastic cover that hides the sunroof motor. Place the sunroof carefully into the desired correct "park" position, then unscrew the sunroof motor retaining screws and draw the motor away from the sunroof drive cable. Leave the motor connected, and operate the sunroof switch back and forth. You'll notice the motor has built-in stops which correspond to the movements necessary to slide open and closed, and tilt open and closed. For some reason, the motor can become confused and just needs to be re-parked. Once you feel you've found the correct motor park position, carefully re-mate the motor and drive cable, and screw the whole works back together. Then test the operation, adjusting as necessary. It's normal for this process to require several attempts, but you'll eventually cure the problem.
