The sunroof on my '87 9ks never leaked until I had a shadetree mechanic replace the headliner a couple of summers ago. Since that time, I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to troubleshoot/cure the problem w/o having to take the entire headliner out. The 4 drains are patent and the sunroof weatherseals are good. I have always thought that the problem was that the headliner incline from front to back and/or side to side was not steep enough, allowing water to accumulate in the center channels located in the headliner. Once full, rather than draining out the rear drains, the water would breech the high point at the rear of the sunroof opening and spill into the cabin.
I noticed that your narrative mentions a "black metal channel parallel to the rear of the sunroof" called a "rain gutter, which aligns underneath the rear seam of the panel when it's closed" and "is actually attached to the interior sunroof panel and slides with it when sliding the sunroof open or closed." My '87 does not have any such part fixed. Should it? If so, this would possibly help/cure my problem.
