Hey Black Blur, I can sympathize. My intellectually baffling car audio experience was when I was having my car stereo installed, the younger fellow, probably about 20 (no offense to guys that age or younger intended), who worked at the shop obviously had a bit of chip on his shoulder and wanted to make sure I knew that he was more of a man than me on account of his audio system. He proceeded to tell me how "stupid" I was because I was (he acutally used the term stupid) installing my 6.5's in the parcel shelf, rather than cut up the doors. His reasoning, however, was that it would wreck the imaging. I told him that my priority was not imaging, but as a Linn source/Levinson amps/Quad Electrostatic panels user on the home front, my priorities were speed and clarity. He told me that he too, had electrostatic panels and that they imaged awesomely. Obviously our interpretation of imaging was a bit skewed as panels, by the very laws of physics, just don't image as well as a well designed pair of in phase dynamic speakers (KEF, Linn, etc.). When I asked him what he used he said Carver. I politely told him that Bob Carver had never made an electrostatic speaker, but they he did design a ribbon about 10 years ago called the Amazing. He said, after an awkward pause, that ribbons and stats were the same thing. I explained the technical differences between the two principals, but as he started to look dazed and drool I decided that I was wasting my breath. Whatever. Then, feeling a bit put out, he tried to get into a wattage debate with me, bragging that his carver amps put out a 1000 watts a side. Between you and me, there's no such Carver amp, but maybe in the car audio Bizarro Superman universe where 5 watt amps put out 50 watts for .00000001 seconds at -50C it made sense . I told him he found a great deal and that I must have gotten screwed as my Levinson 27.5 amp cost about $8000 (Canadian mind you) and only supplies 100 watts @ 8 ohms. I think he caught the sarcasm, because he then walked away stating, I've been in audio for 15 years and I'm not going to f'in argue with you! Enough said.
He put me in my place. I got in my Aero, fired up the system he had just installed probably making $6.50 an hour, and left him to his 'career'.
Cheers,
Bill
