Starter/Flywheel questions and problems

My 88 9kt turbo has had a starter problem for sometime now. Of course it's only gotten worse with time but in the begining it wasn't sooo bad. My problem now lies in my oversite of possible flywheel dammage from a badly aligned or failing pinion gear (right word? The gear on the starter that ingauges the flywheel). The problems are as such:
1.starter turns but does not ingauge flywheel
2.gear connects with flywheel, lots of grinding, turns over once or twice then starter just spins.
If you go on like that a couple of times you can get engine started. Happens more often when engine is cold. Not so often when engine is at normal temp. So have I cooked my flywheel while ignoring a rather simple starter problem or are my worst fears a little premature?
Thanks agian this BB has saved my soo much time and money that I think I would have had to get rid of my 9k without it.
Chuck
