Sounds like you have a bad ring gear . If you look through the ignition timing hole with a light you should be able to see the teeth . TAKE OUT THE PLUGS AND SLOWLY TURN THE ENGINE OVER BY HAND .This can be done by pulling on the belts or using a socket through the rubber access plug in the fenderwell . It sounds like you will need a whole new ring gear but make sure its that and not the starter pinion . I had a friend who had a few broken ring gear teeth and if the engine happened to stop with those broken teeth lined up with the starter it would never engage . We would all pile out of the car (not a Saab) and rock it while in gear (Man. trans.) until the flywheel moved enough to allow the starter pinion to engage good teeth then we would take off with a roar .Great fun if your 15 or 16 !!
